Painting a gpu backplate?

I plan to get the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8GB AORUS xtreme edition, and it matches my needs well, but there is one problem. On the backplate, there is this ugly copper heatsink that I cant imagine will go well with my black and green theme. So I was wondering if the heatsink matters enough to the heat dispersion of the card to not mess with it so that I can paint it black. If painted or not painted doesn't matter, what paint should I use?

I can't see how painting that copper back would effect temps much if at all. I would buy a premium high temp paint from Rust-oleum and go to town on it.

But I was just reading something that said that the gpu hits the same temps even with the copper entirely removed?
