Is PCIEX 8 affecting my GTX 1080's performance?

GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Superclocked
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k
MotherBoard: Z97MX-Gaming 5
RAM: G.Skill 16GB Ripjaws (DDR3)
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 ATX Power Supply
HDD: 2x st1000dm003 (My main HDD is a little tuckered out, but this wasn't an issue for my 970)
Monitors: 2x BenQ GL2450 (24 inch 1920 x 1080)

Hello.

I have upgraded from a GTX 970 Zotac to a 1080, but since then my performance has been worse, I suspected the PSU (was a CX600) was to blame to a upgraded that, only to find my PC performing even worse than before!

An example is The Witcher 3. I could play on max settings and keep a stable 60FPS. My card would draw 189W maximum. Now with the new PSU my card will only draw a maximum of 143W and I get 40 - 55 FPS on the same settings.

Not sure why, also my card is plugged into a PCIEX 8 slot, because my PCIEX 16 slot was blocked off by my CPU fan (It's a chunky boy) this wasn't an issue for my 970 but it may be for a 1080, after all it's rather different and newer gen card from a 970. Would this be the source to my issue? I have spent a lot of time and money over this ordeal, and just want it to end. Please help!

Do not reply with anything suggesting an SSD. I'm looking for someone with an actual solution.

well that is an actual reason that your new and much faster card could be preforming worse... maybe one of your drives is going out and causing the whole system to slow down. i had the same cpu and same motherboard on the last pc i built and i had two titan x in sli with zero issues but i also was only using ssds in the system. also i wouldnt waste my time posting something i didnt think could help...

I don't think a new card in the same spot can perform worse (due to the slot). Same if there's a bandwidth problem, but not worse.

I'd run DDU in safe mode and reinstall the latest driver. Ensure nothing in Windows power saving settings are limiting the cpu. Set nVidia control panel to max performance.

Have you used afterburner or something else to watch cpu/gpu load and temps? Could be thermal throttling since its slow but not crashing.

If all that is good I'd try to RMA the card or trade for a new one if store allows it.

PCIE 3.0 8X is not a bottleneck. The only card(s) that eat that much bandwidth is the 1080TI and Titan Xp @4K under certain games / configurations.

From looking at your specs nothing should be a bottleneck. So you may want to uninstall the drivers with DDU to wipe them and reinstall the newest ones.

Also for the witcher 3 is your Hair FX on or off? that can make a major impact, also the resolution. If you are truly running the same resolution and settings, than I can only guess it is a driver issue unless your CPU is downclocking for some reason. The 1080 is a major upgrade or a 970 so you should be seeing at lest double FPS.

1) x8 not the issue. That's proven several times, including at Gamers Nexus.

2) use DDU, then reinstall the latest NVidia drivers http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

3) In power options, make sure that "PCIe link-state.. " isn't set to HIGH (that can throttle down the PCIe bus)

4) Make sure card is properly inserted, and power cables are properly inserted.

5) *Use a BENCHMARK solution that is repeatable not a game. I'll look for some numbers I can post below.

6) Use software to show your "GPU usage" in a game on-screen. EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner etc (though it can be confusing to figure out).
- once that's showing look at GPU usage. Most games are bottlenecked at the GPU, so you should expect to usually see 90% (and the FREQUENCY should be near max such as 1800MHz or whatever).

- I'll repeat, the GPU usage should be over 90%, the frequency should be near max, AND there should be no CPU bottleneck or FPS cap such as VSYNC. (Unigine Valley is a good example, but note the top-right values are probably WRONG so use your own software).

Gone though and checked everything everything I could, interestingly my GPU stays a 1708Mhz regardless if I'm doing nothing on the desktop or in a game. Temp remains around 30 - 40 degrees too. Earlier tonight my clock would act normal, go up and down at different points.

Using both PrecisionX OC and MSI after burner, both giving the same readings. As for the over clock it's done it automatically since I installed the card. Right now both MSI and Precision are giving me this:

That picture was taken with nothing but this web browser open.

Hey,
You need to concentrate on comparing BENCHMARKS otherwise it's hard to help you beyond the comments we've made.

I did a quick one for FURMARK at 1920x1080 (system was in idle previous) and got:
- 9781 points, 163avg

If you're CLOSE to that then it sounds like the basic hardware and Windows power settings sound fine.

I have numbers for 2560x1440, but I can rerun at 1920x1080 if you have any of THESE that can run benchmarks in-game or just benchmark apps:

a) Unigine Valley and Heaven
b) 3dmark time spy
c) metro 2033/LL (redux or original)
d) sleeping dogs
e) bioshock ultimate
f) hitman absolution
g) batman AO, AK, or AC (some need to restart game for settings to take effect)
h) ME Shadow of Mordor (some resolutions aren't the same. I have 2560x1440 monitor but 1920x1080 is not an option for me exactly. close though)
i) dragon age inquisition
j) thief (couple year ago)
k) Dirt 2,3, Showdown
l) Just Cause 2
m) Devil May Cry 4, 4 Special ed
n) Far Cry 2
o) Lost Planet 2
p) Mafia II

All ready got some for Firestrike, approx 14000 from memory, can redo for a exact number if you need it, just doing the furmark test now.

Hey man, I got Shadow of Mordor. Currently I'm doing a FurMark test at 1080p and already did a firestrike test on 3DMark which scored approximately 14000. can redo for a exact number.

I ran FurMark, I got a average of 126 FPS and my GPU didn't go below 90% usage, but me being a pleb with benchmarks I didn't get a score.

FurMark is useless these days because how the drivers stop it from doing it's job. It will never put it under full load. Nvidia stop FurMark in it's drivers because how it use to kill cards from unnatural power draw and nicknamed the card killer.

You'd expect at least a similar score though between two different GTX1080's. My score was a lot higher than his. Something like 163FPS vs 126FPS for the 1080p test?

I'll run Firestrike as he tested that.

UPDATE: *no idea why I got 163FPS before, but now the score is lower and I'm getting "133FPS" which is closer to your 126FPS so that's promising.

you could get a pcie riser and hook it up to the x16 slot while maintaining the card where it is at

LL

/shrug some mobos are very persnickety when it comes to pcie slots

make sure it is pcie 3.0 x16 compatible, and has good shielding

Why not purchase another cpu cooler. I have a Silverstone htpc case so I know about cramped... Then place your gpu in correct slot. If this turns out to be your issue, return or sell new psu.

Ok so an interesting update!

I have been playing around with my computer. and I was able to fit the 1080 into the x16 slot! Great I thought! No. Although the LEDs lit up and the fans span the computer didn't recognise the GPU. I tried 3 times in the idea that it wasn't seated properly. But as soon as I but it back into the 8x it worked, not a fix but at least I can use my monitor :D
