Flashy-looking things around CPU sockets?

Hey there, I used to be big into building custom rigs back around the time when the Phenom black edition was top of the line. >.>

Anyway, I'm starting to get back into it, but one thing is baffling me: what are the giant angular... things around the CPU socket on these higher-end mobos? Heat sinks? They are usually positioned in an L-shape starting north of the cpu and extending opposite the ram. I honestly don't remember ever seeing anything like this.

Solution
yeah, however they are certainly overdone on many. one can not judge the quality of the VRM by the heatsinks, as they all make them as big as possible it seems. that Asus board has both the looks, and the VRM to back it up which is nice.
