AM4 Socket Question

As has been reported, the AM4 cooling mounting is no longer compatible with previous AMx/x+ sockets. But what has changed, the retention bracket clip spacing or the hole pattern that the retention bracket mounts to? Or both? Can I still use a AM3 cooler that mounts directly to the retention bracket?

Solution
You need to check with your cooler manufacturer to see if you need a new mounting bracket for an older AM3/+ compatible cooler. Generally, coolers that attached with the standard clip feature are still compatible. This may vary though but form what I have read, most are fine. Those coolers that required screws and mounting brackets/plates generally are not compatible with AM4. Again, some manufacturers are offering free AM4 kits. You'll have to do some research with your cooler manufacturer.

Thanks. Yes, that is the question I had. If the retention bracket itself is still the same, then coolers that clamp directly to it should work. You seem to be verifying this. I already know that the 4 x mounting holes in the motherboard are a different spacing. I guess I shouldn't have added that part to my initial question.

Thanks. I contacted Corsair (as per Ditt44's suggestion) and they confirmed for me that my Hydro H60 AIO does not need an adapter for the AM4 socket. So that pretty much seems to confirm that while the hole mounting pattern for the AMD retention bracket itself has changed, the actual retention bracket has not. Best thing AMD has had going for it all these years was the standardization of their retention bracket. But your confirmation will ice it.

Btw, what Ryzen platform were you getting?

Yes most new Wraith coolers use screws to backing plate, those are the round ones that look similar to Intel. Some must be conventional AMD, at least there are some pictured in manual for my MB. Old style Wraith and ordinary ones that hail from AM2 socket and up also fit. Right now I have one from my FX 6350 and fits and locks.
