So I have a laptop with lots of important files, I can't turn the laptop on. Is it possible to swap hard drives with another laptop to keep the files from the orginal laptop

Solution
The drive will still need power. If you have a desktop and just want to go the 7pin SATA cable route, you will still need to provide power to the drive somehow. The connector in your laptop is likely one with both power and SATA integrated together (22pin) so you will need a separate cable to provide power to the drive, either from your desktop or to transfer power from your laptop.

Yes, assuming that the drive is still good. I'm assuming that it's just a regular 2.5" SATA drive, in which case you can just use a SATA to USB adapter to connect the drive to another computer, sort of just like an external drive.

You don't even need a SATA to USB adapter. The SATA connector on 2.5" laptop drives is the same as on 3.5" desktop drives. So you can plug the laptop's drive straight into a desktop using an 89 cent SATA cable.

I wouldn't bother trying to put the drive into another laptop. Unless the laptop model is identical, it's unlikely to boot.

Hey, thanks for a response, beause I was worried I was going to mess up the second laptop. Well the laptop where I have files on is windows 7, the second is windows 8. Well so my school had this agreement you pay to rent a laptop and after 3 years you stop paying and you get to keep it. I have a passion for music so there is a lot of music from when i was little (im 17) I have borrowed another school laptop so that I could try getting the files out. So you're saying I need a wire thingie?
