Core 2 Quad Q9400 and GTX 1050 Ti?

Hey guys, Im putting together a budget build for a friend. I know the socket 775 platform is aging, but how well do you think his PC would run games like Subnautica, Rocket League, Gear Up, BeamNG.Drive and Osiris New Dawn? We will upgarde to a newer platform in teh future, but he would liek to make a start on his PC now. He has a good 775 board, so we would need to buy a CPu for it. Q9400s are teh best priced quads in Australia. Any input guys? Cheers

Solution
The Q9400 does suprisingly well in modern games, there's only a handful that it can't hold 30fps in (e.g. battlefield1). Make sure you have 6-8gb ram to go with it though

I wouldn't worry about bottleneck if you're planning an upgrade in the future. Get the 1050 ti now and use it in the new machine when you do upgrade. I would suggest a G4560 as a good budget option:

CPU: Intel Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor ($75.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Motherboard: ASRock B250M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($109.00 @ IJK)
Memory: G.Skill NT Series 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($73.70 @ Newegg Australia)

Awesome, thanks man. That seems like a good option. Also, do you think the Q9450 is worth the extra $20-$30? CHeers

pay extra? I wouldn't pay money for any core 2 cpu...... It's a really old cpu. Many of those old motherboards will have problems, problems with driver support/OS support and problems running newer hardware. The newer dual core intels will likely outperform it anyway. Look on ebay for an old dell with an intel i5, many can be had for around $200, then you just need to add a gpu.

here an i5 2500 box for $230, with windows and 8gb ram:

you would just need to either find a slimline pcie card or buy a cheap full size case and gpu.

As I mentioned in my OP, the 775 setup is only temporary, so the CPU and motherboard WILL be upgraded in the future. My friend is looking for a decent gaming experience now, so the 775 platform will temporarily do that. :)

Sorry i missed the bit where you already had a motherboard, i thought you were suggesting the q9400 build cost more than the suggested new dual core build..... I still recommend going down the second hand dell route, you get a fairly modern quad core i5 cpu that will handle anything, plus current OS and decent amount of ram, you can find cheaper models for under $200 if you look around.

I have a couple of core 2 duo cpu's laying around, i could possibly post you out one for free to get you running, depending on where in Australia you are? pm me if your interested.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it. We already have an E8400 in the board, but that will most likely not be enough for his games. Thanks anyway though. :)
