Hi to all,

I have a Lenovo Y-700-15ISK laptop with 1 TB WD Blue 5400'' energy efficient HDD,which spins down when no data from it is accessed!

This makes me a really big problem while playing games, which are installed on this HDD,with causing stuttering and freezing while playing the games!

I have watched this video from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTBF2vrTQAM
But it doesn't help me!

What should I do to fix this HDD issue correctly,in order to fix the freezing problems while gaming?

p.s Please tell me what should I do to this HDD,please do not reccommend me to buy a SSD,because I don't have enough money to upgrade the 128 GB SSD which comes with the laptop to a larger one!

Thanks to all in advance!
Best regards!

I'm not sure if the game stuttering would be caused by the hard drive, since when the game loads, all the necessary data gets loaded into RAM. Do you mean when you get to a new level/map within the game, it stutters while the disk spins up, and then goes back to normal?

Anyway, go ahead and change your power settings to stop the disk spinning down and we'll see if the in-game stuttering goes away.

I think if you go to control panel -> hardware and sound -> power options -> change plan settings -> change advanced power settings -> hard disk -> turn off hard disk after:

and set that to "never."

At least, that's how you get there on windows 7...

Dear Max1s,thank you so much! You resolved my problem!
Just one more question!
Is there a possibility of shortening the life-span of the hard-drive with this tweak?
Best regards!

Oh good, glad that fixed it. :)

About the life-span of the hard drive: I think it might actually be worse for the hard drive to be stopping and starting all the time, rather than just spinning continuously. But I don't know. I wouldn't worry about it, the reason they spin down isn't to extend their life, it's just to save power/noise.

That being said, you should always have a backup of your important files, because no hard drive is failure-proof.
