Help with a GPU pick

Hi There,
I just put up my new gaming rig together and I'm having a difficult time deciding on a GPU. I'm currently using an old Asus GTX 460 top (768mb) graphics card as I really can't decide on a GPU.

Here is what I have (up and running):

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Processor
Gigabyte GA-AB350-GAMING 3 Mobo
GeIL EVO X 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 RAM
Corsair Carbide 400C Case
EVGA SuperNOVA 650W 80+ Gold G3 Power Supply
250gb SSD

The games I tend to play are generally slash and hack like Diablo III, Path of Exile, Vikings wolves of Midguard ..etc.

This is the 1st system I built in as long as I can remember and I will not upgrade anything for at least 4 years. Ideally I want a graphics card that will last that long.

I was considering AMD RX480 8g and Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb. Price wise, they end up costing almost the same (all prices inc shipping/tax):

MSI GTX1060 6gb Gaming X ~ $420 cad
XFX Radeon RX 480 GTR 8GB ~ $420 cad (add another $30 if you want to change the fans LED colour).
ASUS ROG RX 480 STRIX-RX480-O8G-GAMING ~ $410 cad

In the beginning I was really leaning team red but looking at the current pricing, and knowing how good Nvidia drivers are, I'm not sure team red is the way to go!

I've read a lot of reviews about the two cards, and I really can't decide on which one! Yes, AMD does better at DX12, but just slightly better, while the GTX 1060 is about 10% all-around better than RX480. Almost every comparison/article mention how AMD have closed the gap, but they never say anything about surpassing/beating Nvidia!

Budget wise, $400 is probably as max as i want to go and I can live with paying the extra $10/$20 above. Ideally, I would have loved to stay within the $350 cad (inc ship/tax) but I don't think that's possible for either card. The issue here, If I end up paying $430 for a GTX1060/RX480, why not pay another $120~$130 and get a GTX1070. The MSI Founder Edition is $400 usd (roughly $550 cad) - I can have that shipped to a friend in the states that tends to visit here at least once a month - I know the GTX 1070 will last for the 4~5 years; but again, do I really need such a powerful card for the type of games I play (the little angel on my right is saying no lol).

P.s. I will not be over-clocking whatever card I get, so OC capability is not a factor.

Please help :)

Solution
yes it uses more watts but not much more, perhaps 20 or 30w more, if you can with the rx480, the 580 will be just the same

1060 is power efficient and a bit better on some ames

if i could i would get a rx480 8gbs, but both are great options

don't buy gtx 1060 3 gbs, only the 6 gbs model
Get a 480 / 580 8gb. AMD driver support is generally much better for legacy cards, so like a fine wine they will keep getting better with time. Plus, DX12 will slowly become the standard and AMD are currently way ahead in that department - nvidia are scrambling to catch up.

This is coming from a nvidia fanboy btw

I really isn't. Like at all. Once the new generation has been adpated by a lot of people nvidia drops the optimizations for the older cards. Amd still releases drivers that optimize games for the hd5000 series. Of course less often but still.

Actually they dropped all support for pre GCN cards over a year ago. No more support for 6000 or earlier, or even the lower end 7000s

aaaah!!! the RX580! higher temps and draws a lot more power than a GTX1060/RX480 - at least the three reviews I read all agreed on that! Not to mention, only a couple of them are actually out and/or I cna get my hands on, that's why I didn't really consider the card, unless someone can come up with a decent argument that I should consider a 580 :)

I think the 480 and 580 are close enough that you should get whichever is cheaper on the day. The 480 is definitely more efficient though
