I will like to upgrade my system for better gaming experience, currently gaming at 1440p 144hz.
I am thinking of upgrading my cpu/motherboard/ram next, but not sure which Intel processor to go next.

Below are my current gaming build
i7 920 + Asus P6T deluxe + CM V8 HSF
12gb rams
msi gtx980ti lightning
Corsair 620w PSU
27" monitor (2560x1440)

Solution
Depending on your budget, I would just get the 7700K. Some people may sway you over to Ryzen, and again the choice is yours. I personally, would get an i5-7600K and a Z270 board with 16GB of DDR4 RAM. But that's just me.

Yeah your GPU is still okay for now. I have 970 SLI which is only about 10% faster and am not in a hurry to replace them with my 1440p (60Hz) monitor. I'd recommend the 7700K as well. Ryzen is still too new and there may be some yet to be discovered bugs out there. AMD apparently fixed Ryzen's early memory speed support problem, but who knows if anything else will happen? I'd wait until after summer when it starts maturing if I was going to build a Ryzen.

Ryzen's advantage over Intel's 7700K is that it is a better productivity chip due to six cores (video editing and other apps, even beating Intel's 6-core offerings). The only real problem I have with AMD in general on Ryzen is that they just do not offer much overclocking headroom.

I forgot to mention one thing. If you plan on buying a Z170 or Z270 motherboard for a 7-series Intel chip, be VERY careful that it comes from the factory BIOS-ready for the 7-series. Many out there require a flash upgrade with a 6-series chip to work with a 7-series.
