Extend dorm network with a router

Hello. I live in a dorm in Germany and it seems that they don't allow the use of a router, even more extending the network with WLAN. I have some problems with my ethernet adapter, so I cannot use wired connection. I have contacted the IT service of the university, but get no help, so I haven't internet in the dorm. Anyways I have a router. And I were using the router for some days. But after this few days my router doesn't work anymore.
Also the network has 802.1 protection. My friend extends hims network by connecting ethernet to him's laptop and then he creates a VPN connection and distributes encrypted Wi-Fi.
Can I somehow extend the network in my room, even with VPN, so as result the network will see my IP as 1 IP and not DHCP extention? I don't understand a lot about it, but I think I left the stuff clear =)
Thank you.

Your problem likely is that they do not support WDS. This is what is needed to create a repeater. You would need a router that can accept the wan connection as wireless. You could I suppose use a wireless client-bridge and connect it to the wan port of a regular router. The ones from ubiquiti are meant for outdoor use but they can be used indoor and they support running both as a client-bridge and as a router with wireless WAN. You would still need a AP to create the signals for your end devices so you need 2 boxes no matter what.

Your largest issue no matter what you do is if you create another wireless network even if you attempt to hide the ssid and stuff they can still easily detect it. Many commercial AP have features...
"Also the network has 802.1 protection"

Just to help improve your understanding, 802.1x is not a type of protection, it's simply a universal WiFi standard which allows WiFi devices from different manufacturer's to communicate with each other.

The "protection" or encryption of the WiFi signal is a separate layer, originally known as "WEP" (easily cracked) but now superceded by stronger encryption standards (WPA & WPA2).

What caught my eye is " I have some problems with my ethernet adapter, so I cannot use wired connection".

Can you offer some additional explanation about what is or is not happening with respect to your ethernet adapter?

Have you had your friend look at the ethernet adapter and its configuration?

May be directly fixable as is or by simply using a USB ethernet adapter as suggested by Kanewolf.

Wireless will be slower and probably have more problems. You will be going "backwards".

Fixing your wired ethernet would seem more practical. Could be a bad cable, bad wall port - who knows....

Also will help you avoid trouble if, as mentioned, you get caught trying to work around the rules.

The problem is with entrance, I have been using it for some years and now it constantly loses connection, sometimes even when I type.
About the speed. Speed is about 5mb/s with the ethernet. So no huge diference.

About the troubles, well, all that they can do is disable my internet connection and ban my devices, so I will stay in dorm without internet. Actually as I'm standing now... so now I can say that I'm already banned xD

Also the problem is that I use kindle, have mobile phone, all needs wireless. Because none of this devices accept ethernet as entrance. It's pretty stupid actually to don't be able to buy a book in amazon, or access to facebook using phone in the dorm.

That's why I'm asking for a possible sugestion. I'm not sure, but is it possible to connect a VPN to router, and in this case will the admin see that there is a network extension? Maybe also redirect all the trafic of the devices via VPN to the router to it retrieve all data as 1 only IP?

By the way, why it is possible with laptop hotspot, and seems that it's allowed? For example I see tons of people using connectify and other software... isn't it possible to make this kind of hotspot using router?

Also I have premium in connectify, in case it helps...

I can not see why they would outlaw a router and allow connectify....if that is the case take a junk laptop and load a linux router software.
