I built myself a budget computer a few months ago and I was running a game on it when my computer shut off on its own. I checked the thermals and it was resting at 100° Celsius, so I opened up my PC to find the heatsink wasnt even resting against the cpu. I laid the pc on its side and let gravity hold it there, but now I need more room on my desk and its become quite a bother. I've tried screwing in the mounting bracket tighter to no avail, and I need some help with what to do next.

Thank you in advance.

// P.S. Currently running AMD FX 8320E on the MSI Pro Gaming Carbon 970 mobo.

I would suggest a good aftermarket heatsink. One that replaces the stock mounting as it sounds tobe defective. This on is an equal to me cm212 so it should be enough cooling.

i think you mounted the retention bracket wrong, if it is the stoc one you lock both sides and then push the blue or black lever to the left side untill it locks itself in place very tight

you could remove it, check the thermal paste and see some videos on youtube on how is done, to see if the bracket and the lever are properly seater or not and if it is working well

I see and given you already tried to tighten its most likely broken. The cryorig cooler will save about $10 so with any luck you can get it sooner. I wouldn't suggest risking damage to the CPU as it has to be a pressure contact. Unless you know someone thats replaced there stock cooler and willing to give you the am3+ retention mount. Those will cost nearly half what the cryorig does.
