Core i5 or xeon x3460

Solution
Okay...

If I understand correctly your CURRENT system is something like THIS:
- G4400 (CPU)
- 1151 motherboard
- 4GB DDR3 memory
- Windows 64-bit 7/8 or 10?

And your MAIN ISSUE is what to do with your current funds?

Well if you can't afford a GRAPHICS CARD and a CPU then it's better to get just the graphics card. No point in having a good CPU without a graphics card right?

So you'll have some CPU bottlenecking which varies significantly from game to game (so maybe do a little research on how demanding some games are for CPU... some online games like MMO shooters can be really demanding).

At this point I'd point you to pcpartpicker, and

1) look at new graphics card, and
2) add more system memory (4GB isn't quite enough)

Not sure...
LGA1156 is pretty old now, so I'm not sure what your exact plan is.

You do realize the CPU and motherboard must be compatible? The best CPU for LGA1156 that's an i5 is an i5-750?

I wouldn't recommend spending that much money to upgrade an older system like that, though obviously you'd have to spend a little more to rebuild your system.

If budget is tight maybe you can find a USED CPU (see the motherboard support page for the CPU SUPPORT list for your EXACT model of motherboard).

The i5-7500 is just one part. You'd also have to buy:
- motherboard
- new copy of Windows
- system memory (DDR4)

I looked up the X3460 and it's an LGA1156 socket for compatibility so I assume that's what you have?

Again, if money is tight get the XEON.

Please tell us:
a) motherboard you have
b) Windows version (i.e. W7 64-bit)
c) amount of system memory (i.e. 4GB)
d) graphics card (only if you want to play games)
e) PURPOSE of upgrading.
f) current CPU

We can help you out a lot better if you provide that information. (use CPU-Z or Speccy to help find some of the info if confused)

If you just want things to be a bit SNAPPIER for non-gaming purposes then I'd recommend an SSD then clone or reinstall Windows to that.

I already have that Mobo I'm planning on getting a LGA 1156 Mobo and that CPU until I can get like a i5 or i7

????STOP. Take a step back because this post is getting confusing.

"I already have that Mobo I'm planning on getting a LGA 1156 Mobo and that CPU until I can get like a i5 or i7"

Huh?
You already have WHAT motherboard?
And why would you plan to get an LGA1156 motherboard later when it's already really old? I'm guessing close to EIGHT YEARS old?

You also mention FX-6100 which is an AMD CPU so also completely different. Seriously, not sure what your plan is.

*You obviously have an older system, but you don't tell us the PURPOSE of upgrading so it's hard to help you.

If you want to play GAMES then we need a completely NEW system.
If you want a bit more oomph for basic usage then maybe just an SSD.

Let me build using PCPARTPICKER just to give an EXAMPLE of something (including the cost of Windows). I'll use the Canadian link.

Lol sorry man I already have a LGA 1151 socket Mobo but also it's for gaming but I'm not really sure whether or not I should spend that $269 on a core i5 ik it's a new architecture and all but I want to save my money up for a gpu them switch back over to the new architecture. I already have a pc built but it's with a g4400 Pentium and 4gb of ram. The fx6100 I got off of a friend and also 14gb ram DDR 3.

Not sure what system memory you have. You can MIX in theory, but if you have a single, 4GB stick I recommend an identical or at least the same frequency and CAS (i.e. 2666MHz CL16) then worry about getting it working properly if you have issues.

I'll post this and see what PCPARTPICKER has trying to get both for under $300CDN (Canadian).
