ASRock AM3+ m.b. 970A-G/3.1 officially lists 4Gb max modules in the support list. I suppose this is just poor documentation, but still. What 8Gb modules have you guys tried?

No. 8GB should be the max modules, because the asrok list max 32GB for the 4 x DDR3 DIMM Slots.
Even the asrock can't try all brands of memory, and put them into the support list, how we can try. But if you want to buy the RAM, like the AMD, gskill, HyperX, Corsair, etc, good brand 1600mhz memory (the speed will depend on what cpu you had), they will fit well with your MB.
