Using TV as Computer monitor

I have a windows 8 laptop and when I connect it to my TV using the HDMI cable, I get no picture on the TV only the message "no signal" on the TV screen
Any Help?

Another thing to check: because it's a TV you may have to select the appropriate external input source in the TV's on-screen setup menu - - that's what I have to do on my TV when the source is HDMI.

Only the SCART input is selected automatically on my TV (when I play a DVD), other external sources have to selected manually in the source menu.
