HDMI vs Display Port to VGA

Using a Nvidia 1060 with my 40' Sony Bravia KDL-40EX521. Not able to get the right picture I want (blurry text, especially in red/white areas).

I've been troubleshooting for over 3 weeks now, so it's between continue to use HDMI to HDMI, or try Display Port to VGA.

Just wanted to see if anyone has input here before I spend $50~ on an adapter, just for it to be the same/worse.

End goal will be to find a TV with Display Port, but doing a quick search I can't really find any, plus financial restrictions at the moment.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Well, I'd say just keep using HDMI. And, actually, unless that DP/VGA adapter is an 'active' adapter, IT WILL NOT WORK. NVidia has disabled analog support with their latest 10 series GPUs, which is a bummer to many people with aging peripherals, but the change was coming sometime. So, really, you're sorta 'stuck' using HDMI. If your display has a DisplayPort port, then use that. But I assume it doesn't? I would get a new HDMI cable. What version of HDMI is your monitor supporting?

Thanks for your responses :)

Yes, unfortunately this TV doesn't have a DisplayPort port.

This is coming after using a very old PC (Windows Vista. Nvidia 260) where I had a perfect image/text. So as you guys can imagine, it's quite mind-boggling. Same TV, same HDMI, different computer.

The only part where anything specifically states "PC" on this TV is in the input modes:

TV, HDMI 1/2/3/4, Video1, Video 2/Component, PC.

I'm pretty sure the only way to get it into "PC" input would be to use VGA with it, but rightfully my PC doesn't have a VGA port.

When researching the TV, KDL-40EX521, I can find "19 pin HDMI Type A", but I'm not sure if that's exactly what your asking for.

As stated earlier, a TV isn't a practical way to scale with a computer's output, no matter the display. I would try the following:

Get an HDMI 2.0 cable, since it is backwards compatible and may remedy your resolution issue in some form,

try to get yourself a better TV or monitor, preferably a monitor, since its designated resolution is meant for the PC platform,

and check your other IO's. Do you have DVI on any of the two devices? if you have DVI-D/DVI-D on your computer, which is possible, you will want to try and find a DVI-D/DVI-I to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

Try this:

The 1080p timing when applied to the HDMI input will be treated as a video timing and not a PC
timing. This will affect the [Preferences] and [Picture & Display] settings. To view PC content,
set [Scene Select] to [Graphics], [Wide Mode] to [Full], and [Display Area] to [Full Pixel].
([Display Area] is configurable only when [Auto Display Area] is set to [Off].)

Thanks for your reply RobCrezz! Unfortunately, I've made sure that it's in "Full" and "Full Pixel", so it's definitely not over scanning. The scene selects don't really do much, as you can manually adjust what they changed to look exactly the same in any scene, whether it be Graphics, Animation, Game, Photo, or whichever.

Atomicdonut17, the TV and HDMI cord I'm using are quite old, so getting a new HDMI 2.0 cable could be the solution for me. I'm just concerned about it fitting in the TV, or are all HDMI connectors generally the same, at least in this case? I can try picking one up today and trying it out, HDMI to HDMI. If that doesn't work, I can get a DVI adapter, but at that point, wouldn't I just be better off using a DisplayPort Adapter to HDMI 2.0?

Unfortunately, getting a new display isn't in the budget at the moment.

all HDMI cable's have the same connector no matter what version it is

Ah, perfect! That makes it easy :p

[Edit] So I've been reading and these different sites are saying that the type of HDMI you get doesn't matter? So should I g out and pick up a $50 cable or will it not make any difference? Does anyone here have firsthand experience with switching from old HDMI to new HDMI and actually notice a difference? Or at this point has everyone switched to DisplayPort already?
