Hi all,

My PC is locking up every 5 minutes if I do not keep the mouse or keyboard input going every now and then. Doesn't matter what is going on as I have been transferring files from my local HDD to my external HDD, and it locked up. If I am watching a video on Netflix, it will lock up if I don't hit the mouse key from time to time.

However, I can play hours on end of high end graphical games no problem as I am always hitting the mouse and keyboard. However, if I pause it for a handful of minutes, it will freeze.

I have tested the RAM with Memtest for 24 hours, the PSU is pretty new (couple months), pretty new GPU (few months). However, my SSD OS drive, Motherboard, and CPU are all 6+ years old.

I have recently re-formatted my PC to try and fix the issue, but still no good. I did boot to a windows boot disk and leave it for an hour (sitting at the main screen), and it did not freeze up on me there however.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Have you tried the IGPU? It might be a driver related problem with the GPU, so try using your on board graphics to see if it still persists. If not check your CPU temps, as your processor might be overheating. You will need to apply new thermal paste, if overheating this is the issue.

Did a bit more testing last night, and it would not lock up while booted into safe mode. Seeing as I had recently reformatted, and didn't have much installed. I decided to reformat again and load drivers one by one and check to see if it locked up as I went.

So far, I have loaded all drivers, and I am still good to go. I started on windows updates this morning, and will continue the process to see if this issue pops back up. So far though, it seems to be ok.

Drivers can be a real pain in the butt to figure out an fix. I recommend Guru3D's Display Driver Uninstaller if you plain to uninstall the GPU driver. Just note that if you do use the program to boot into safe mode, your login four digit pin will not work (1234). You will have you use your real "abc123" password. After that, use Ccleaner's registry fixer to remove unnecessary registry files. Old GPU drivers can leave behind unwanted and corrupt registry files, so it would be a good idea to use Ccleaner's registry fixer. Then, install your GPU drivers.

Hope all goes well.

well sadly, after running the PC for a couple of days after another reformat, I am still having some issues with it. Not quite like it was, but an issue that I noticed the first format, before it started freezing on me.

For some reason, every now and then after being left for a while, my screens will go black (like in power saver mode) and wont turn back on. I am not sure if it is frozen or the PC is still running fine, but I have to do a hard shutdown and reboot when this happens.

I think last time, I turned off all power saver settings in the power options, and then I started noticing the freeze ups every 5 minutes. Will have to play around with it again, but no 100% fix as of yet. :(

Since it did not lockup in safe mode, I would presume it to be driver related. Can you test your computer on integrated graphics to see if the problem still occurs? Are installing drivers from the official manufacture websites? I would also recommend to go into command prompt with admin rights and type in the following commands with out quotes "Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" and "sfc /scannow" These should repair your OS and fix corrupt and missing files. Make sure that you are on the internet, to download these files from Microsoft.
