I bought an Aorus GTX 1080ti Xtreme edition at release, but had trouble with it from day one. It was crashing to desktop in o.c. or gaming mode as soon as anything gpu intensive was done, for example running games in 4k maxed out or using firestrike or timespy. I RMA'd it after about a week of trying to figure out the issue, as advised by the aorus community manager Brian, I was in contact with on reddit. They are claiming there is nothing wrong with it, but I had to phone them before they shipped it back. If it works fine, that's great, but I told them to make sure 100% that they couldn't recreate any crashes before they send it back, and they agreed to test it again before they send it. The psu I have is not the top of the line, but it's wattage is pleanty high enough, I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems or have been successful using these two components together...

The 1080 Ti draws 100 watts more than the 970. You mentioned that in silent mode, you don't have any issues. Try running a GPU stress test in Silent mode. If that works, fire up Prime 95 alongside the GPU stress test (set P95 to 6 threads).

My build is
4790k @4.4 ghz boost, no o.c.
MSI z97 gaming 5
2x8gb 1866 ddr3 kingston hyperx
Corsair h100i gtx installed at top of case as push rxhaust
Adata 256gb ssd sp900
Adata 480gb ssd sp550
4x corsair AF120LED 2 intake at front, 1 intake at bottom, 1 exhaust at back
Corsair vengeance c70 side window changed to solid plexi.

I did not attempt any custom oc profiles, only factory presets, silent, gaming and oc.
I was not able to cause any crashes in silent mode. I used ddu to properly wipe old drivers and installed new up to date drivers from nvidia geforce experience. I also peformed a complete reformat and fresh windows install, with same results.
My old gpu is an asus strix gtx 970 oc, and has been reinstalled and functioning properly in the same pci slot.
I dont have a comparable system to test components with.

I did run a stress test in silent before I sent it in, it didn't crash, but was reaching it's temp target of 84 degrees after about 5 mins. I will try adding the prime 95 when I have it back.
