Hi Guys,
I rushed out and bought the new MSI RADEON RX580 GAMING X 8G hoping to enjoy some
eye candies but to my horror and deep frustration couldn't get it to work on my pc.
My pc being:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition
M/B MSI K9A2 Neo2
Kingston RAM 4GB DDR2 pc6400 800Mhz
Transcend 256GB SSD
Windows 8.1
PSU Thermaltake 600W

I took out my old but working graphic card Sapphire HD7750 1GB and slotted in
the MSI RADEON RX580 GAMING X 8G.
When I power on the pc, the display automatically switched to low resolution AMD Microsoft Display Adapter, MSI RADEON RX580 GAMING X 8G is not detected by device manager. I tried to install the new drivers that come with the MSI CD but
installation abort by itself with following message:
Unknown AMD Hardware

Another thing I noticed is the MSI RADEON RX580 GAMING X fans spinning loudly like on full speed.

What's happening I honestly don't know.
My previous experience with Sapphire cards has been real easy plug and play.

The suspense is killing me slowly even as I seek your advice on this matter.

1. Could it be my 4G DDR2 RAM is insufficient?
2. Could it be my MSI motherboard old PCI-E 2 slot is incompatible with the new graphic card?
3. Could it be MSI RADEON RX580 GAMING X 8G is already DOA when purchased?

Solution

It might be the lack of a specific Win 8 driver. This is one of the kinds of issues you get when you try to use the latest computer components on old tech with an old...

howdy thanks for first response!
you mean the AMD Crimson drivers version 16.xx that my previous Sapphire HD7750 was using?
Now that you mentioned it, the aborted MSI CD installation of the new AMD Radeon Crimson ReLive Graphics Driver 17.xx
did also indicate Early Crimson Driver 16.xx already installed beside the Unknown AMD Hardware prompt.

It could be they are in conflict with your new card, since they are both AMD. Use this to wipe out any previous drivers and chose to uninstall in SAFE mode: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
The program will drive you itself to restart in safe mode. Do it and wait until it re-opens. It will then tell you to proceed with the uninstall. After you finish do a restart again, and try installing the new drivers. It is better to find your new drivers online and make sure you are selecting the corresponding Windows 8.1 OS.

Mega thanks for the step by step Tolis_GR.
I'm going to try that.
BTY I just checked http://support.amd.com/en-us/download for latest driver for RX580
but none is available for Windows 8.1, only Windows 10 & 7. Could it be Windows 8.1 has yet
to be geared for the new RX580? Could it be an OS (temporary?) incompatibility issue with the new card?
Wonder if any body else faced similar issue with this card?
I was going to buy the just released Zotac 1060 6GB Amp+ OC after hearing it's good but settled for
this eye-catching MSI red monster and now faced with a problem.

It might be the lack of a specific Win 8 driver. This is one of the kinds of issues you get when you try to use the latest computer components on old tech with an old OS. If you aren't on the latest motherboard bios, that might also be a contributing factor though I doubt it. It's more likely in that case that this card simply won't work with a motherboard of that vintage.

I'm sure you realize that this is far more GPU power than a triple core of that age can use. A 460 would have been my recommendation, or a used HD 7870. Not an 8gb 580 lol. You'd be worse off with a new Nvidia by the way, they are even less compatible with old motherboards.
