Hi.

I'm looking to work out a budget to upgrade my pc in the next couple of months but not sure what I should aim for. Like would more boosting to 16gb ram make a big diffirence or is it time to get a new cup/mobo combo and go over to DDR4 ram?

I'm not looking to run massive games at full graphics but I have noticed that in some games like GTA V for example I get frame drops during explosions and so forth on high settings.

Main current specs
Intel i5 2500k
Asus p97Pro
8gb Corsair Vengeance
GTX 780
CM GX 750w PSU

Any suggestions would help <3

Are you overclocking your CPU? If not, I'd suggest putting on a decent heatsink and overclocking it. Bringing it up to 4Ghz will certainly help on some games. A decent heatsink is a cheap upgrade. The Scythe Mugen Max gets great bang for the buck. It competes well with much larger big air counterparts. If you want something cheaper. A Be Quiet! Pure Rock or Cryorig H7 will get good results.

As for RAM it depends on how much you have open in the background. More won't hurt. But I wouldn't expect much of a boost. A few current AAA titles may be helped. I doubt it would help GTA V much.

The GTX 780 is still quite solid.

I'd start with the overclocking though. It has great potential and is the cheapest option. Just keep in mind the...

I'd start with the overclocking though. It has great potential and is the cheapest option. Just keep in mind the Magic VCore is under 1.3V and the max safe temp you want is 80C. Turn off Turbo Boost when you OC. Once you get your stable numbers locked in on the VCore and multiplier. You can fiddle with Turbo Boost, too see if you can get a little more out of dual and single core modes.

Hi.
No overclocking at this moment no, I have not done it before so a little scared :p
But if that is the best option I will watch some video's and get familiar with it and give it a go :)
I have a Corsair H70 water cooler in my system.

Great board. Dont use the built in auto OC as it tends to set the voltage too high. Do it right, do it yourself :D

You have probably the most popular overclocking cpu ever so there are a million detailed guides out there, you will no doubt find one that matches your motherboard too.

It's fairly simple. Ignore all the other distractions in the BIOS overclocking options. They are more advanced and don't really need to be bother with. They are just there for those obsessed with getting last drop out of an OC. All you need to worry about is VCore, Multiplier and Turbo Boost (off). Leave everything else on auto.

Start with the default multiplier and VCore. Find the BIOS option to load optimized defaults.
Increase the multiplier in x1 stages until you reach the maximum stable clock rate.
Once it can't go higher. Increase the VCore in 0.05V increments until the next multi-plier is stable.
Rinse and repeat.
Once you hit 1.3V or 80C under load. You've hit the limit of your CPU.

Run OCCT to stress test the CPU for stability and temps.

Cool, I am going to try it.
"Once it can't go higher." How do I know when it can't go anymore? is this when I start getting blue screens or will it simply not allow me to select it higher?

NVM: I get it now after reading the link a second time :)
I will give this a go and let you guys know how it went :D

I'm back :)

These are my results so far:

Vcore 1.25 @45 = BSOD
Vcore 1.30 @45 = BSOD
Vcore 1.35 @45 = Runs stable with max temps reaching around 70 when playing ARK

New question:
Is 1.35 safe or should I rather try dropping down to 4.2ghz with a lower Vcore?

Thanks again for the help guys <3
