Replacement for a AMD Athlon II X4 630

So I decided to un-dust my PC and decided to start upgrading it to be able to play newer games (TW3, Quake Champions, Battlefield 1, etc) a friend told me I'm bottle necking my GPU, so he told me best to start with a new MB and CPU. I started looking around the internet but there are soo many options, and since in this part of the world pc parts tend to be a little over expensive I can't afford to spend in nothing over the top.

I've checked the recommendations in this site and i3 7100 or i5 7500 seem like the best options right now. Idk about mobos a lot, but I have a budget of around 400 ~ 420 USD dlls tops.

I 'm playing mostly in 1080p, but I have a 4K tv, maybe sometimes going a little higher than FHD.


  • ■ What would be your recommendations to start off? for at least achieving a good smooth experience in 1080p
    ■ After that, what should be the next part to upgrade to get to higher res?
    ■ Would it be necessary to change to DDR4? or just recommended for future proofing?

If you want a new CPU/Mobo (which is recommended) you will need to go with DDR4.

I looked at your board's CPU support list and it shows that you can use any of the Phenom II era 125 watt CPUs and it lists one Bulldozer CPU as being supported. Thus, you can use any of the Phenom II CPUs including the X6s (which would be much faster than your Athlon II unit) as well as any of the original Bulldozer FX units. Pick up a Phenom II X6 1090 or an FX-8150 and you will give yourself a big boost in CPU grunt for not a lot of money or hassle.

Moving to a newer platform with DDR4 would be much more expensive. Also, at higher resolutions, your CPU actually is less of an influence on performance as your GPU starts to become the bottleneck. If you can run 1080p on your CPU, you can run 4k on your CPU, but the same is NOT true for your GPU. A GeForce 760 will not tolerate any kind of gaming on 4K although "office" type work on it will be fine on 4K.

So the support page says FX-4130 is supported, but you are recommending a FX-8150, will that CPU actually work?, even if it's not listed as supported? their are both AM3+ ; cause that seems like a good temporal solution for a better 1080p experience. I can worry about 4k in the future.
 


The BIOS code to support the FX-4130 is the same for any other Bulldozer FX as all of them used the exact same die. Your board supports 125 watt chips so there should be no reason why it wouldn't run an FX-8150.
