copied data has vanished !!

I transferred a large amount of data from my laptop to another laptop's HDD via USB adaptor (windows 10 on laptop) but when I reinstalled the HDD to its laptop. I couldn't find the data on any of the 2 prtitions. I did a restart, under the windows logo, it said scanning & fixing drive C: After boot, I could find the data on drive D: & some of the data on Drive c: but an about 70 gigabytes folder is missing & the disc space is not occupied. How could this happen ?

Was this a Copy or a Move operation? Were other things being done while this large operation was in progress? BEFORE you do anything else, buy a large enough external HD, because the best thing to do right now is:
-- usb or dvd boot Macrium Reflect or anything similar
-- to do a one-pass sector by sector full image of both hard-drives
onto a reliable external HD; then place that ext HD in a safe place
I can't recommend cloning unless you purchase and use two external HDs.
** Letting Windows scan and fix drive C might have been a mistake, we shall see. **
I am aware that some will recommend sending both HDs to a data restoration or data recovery company/specialist, however, if you decide not to do that, my idea above is the 2nd best...
