What Do I need for internet connection

I already have a modem and router in my house but they both render useless to my needs. Im trying to hook up a internet source directly into my computer via ethernet. Do i need a router and a modem? Or just one? and also will it work if i plug it into the wall and not the main internet cable (as its already occupied) thanks.

First you need an active connection from an internet service provider. Then if you are ONLY using your computer you will need a modem. But if you are using more device (PS4, phone, laptop, etc) then a router will be your choice.

However, make sure you do your research about which ISP you will need.

Why? Your request is straightforward enough, nothing special about it.

One household will have one and one modem only (can't have more than one) and one or more optional routers. Unless you are paying your own way, buy a second connection from the ISP, you have no choice but to link up to what already exists. Talk to the "man of the house."
