I have just put a rx 480 8gb into my pc and when i play Battlegrounds it often crashes and the screen just goes blank either yellow or grey within 5 mins of playing not sure why?

Any ideas why its doing this - I have updated drivers to the latest.

Asus P8P67 Pro
Intel core i7 2600k @4.5GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
Asus RX 480 8GB
Corsair 850W PSU

Solution
Yes basically it might become more stable if you lower the power limit/voltage a bit.

Also no the cpu wont have any effect like this on the stability of the gpu, it and its overclock is entirely independant.

Download wattman/msi afterburner and tweak the voltage settings and power limit (lower it slightly, could be the factory overclock is too much for the spesific chip) untill its stable, check for overheating maybe, could be faulty thermal paste application.

If the problem presists after extensive tweaking just return the card for a new one, no need to waste time on a possibly faulty card :)

thanks for advice - had a look in Wattman and not really sure what doing. Also i didnt realise themral paste was on GPUs?

Think my bets bet will be to return it - is it happening becuase its overclocked and my system cant handle it? If so should i just get a standard GPU?

You can check out some tutorials on wattman on youtube.
Your system is decent and should not cause any issues.

Might just have a faulty card, save yourself the hasstle and replace it for a new one :)

EDIT: you could also try plugging it into an other PCI slot, maybe the one youre using it on is faulty (unlikely though). If it doesnt work, again, just return it for a new one

Thanks il try a different PCI slot but i think the other 16x slot is too close to my corsair h80i.

You mention to lower the power limit but should i not increase this to allow it more power so it doesnt crash? Another thing the CPU overclock voltage wont have anything to do with this would it?

Limited the power to -20 and the frequency to -5 and seems to be stable. So is this a PSU issue even though I have 850W?

Yeah my PSU is Bronze 80+ but going to send the Asus Dual OC RX480 back now as it crashed again after reducing settings and i've done some research and realized a few things

AMD state the base clock speed for the GPU is 1120 MHz with potentially boost rate up to 1266 MHz. Yet my OC was at 1305 and even when i reduced slightly was above the AMD recommend boost rate, I understand the 3rd party sellers like Asus do overclock them but this one simply is not stable and seems a lot of people have had this issue.

I could reduce the clock speed right down to what AMD recommend but I paid extra for the OC but if its not working may aswell get a stable card that isnt overclocked at a cheaper rate. Or a different 3rd party like Gigabyte or something and hope their overclock is more stable.

1266 MHz / 1120 MHz

True, you pay a premium for an OC that doesnt even work. This tends to be a common issue with factory OC cards since not all chips are garunteed to achieve these speeds, just return it for another card, you could try asus again, or any other 3rd party. You cant go wrong with gigabyte, not to mention they are good value cards, also have great temps and noise levels.

Like I said its plainly badluck. Check if you can maybe get a refund then you could always pickup the new rx 580.

Yeah looking around it does seem to be quite common. Yeah I got my friend a Gigabyte RX 480 4GB and is running smoothly.

Would you say a RX580 4GB is better than a RX 480 8GB? As dont want to push my budget any further haha but everyone recommend getting 8GB when i was deciding before for future proof.

Actually can maybe push it an extra £25 for the Gigabyte RX 580 8GB as you say Gigabytee are good. It seems the core clock speed it comes out of the box with is the max boost speed recommend by AMD so it should be ok.

That Asus one came with a Overclock bigger than what AMD recommend.

The base model gigabyte gaming rx 580 8gb is for around $229 making it cheaper than most rx 480 8gb cards. (Dont spend extra for the aorus cards, besides looking better, they arent really worth the premium)

If you are only gaming on 1080p, the 4gb rx580 will serve you well with basically no problems, though if you have a little bot extra to spend, might as well get an 8gb since they mostly cost the same (and then youre "future proofed")

Thanks for help, I've ordered a Gigabyte RX 580 8GB and will be here by the end of the week.

Will post again to update if it fixes issue for any others that might have this in future.

Apologies for the late reply - completely forgot to reply to this once i got it setup.

So i went with the Gigabytre RX 580 8GB and its been so much better than the Asus Dual OC 480 8GB - firstly its not crashed once in nearly 50hrs gaming. The Asus 480 crashed every 30 mins as it was too far overclocked (not by me - thats just how it comes).

I've been playing PUBG: Battlegrounds constantly on the Gigabyte RX580 8GB and it plays like a dream - lots of people have issues with this game as its resource heavy at the moment due to it been an Early Access but my CPU & GPU dont have any issues.

FPS
At the time of switching the 480 to the 580, i noticed the 580 was getting around 10 fps better on average than the 480 did. I'm saying at the time because they made some improvements to the game shortly after and how PCs handle it so it now gets much better fps.

Anyway to summarize i would defiantly recommend the Gigabyte 580 8GB. Next time i get a new GPU i will also be checking what AMD website recommend the max boost overclock speed is and confirm the 3rd party hasnt overclocked it past this like i found with Asus.
