So I've planning a dedicated Plex Server build based on Ryzen but I hit a couple of stumbling blocks..

I've gone for the Fractal Node 804 cube case, just because it was small and supported 10 hard drives natively (I'll be going with 8). I intend for the PC to sit in a closet somewhere but I like that the node would look alright in the front room if it came down to it.

The first issue is the motherboard.. The 804 supports mATX but Ryzen has a limited selection of mATX boards at the moment. I had my eye on the MSI B350 Mortar but it only has 4 SATA ports on the board. There are plenty of X370 board that support 8 HDDs but they're all ATX..

My main question is, would it make more sense to cut my losses on the case (the only component I've bought so far besides RAM + PSU), get an ATX case and an X370 board, OR, get a SATA expansion card?

Is there a performance penalty for having some drives connected to the mobo directly and others connected to an expansion card?

Would it be better to get a dedicated RAID card instead?

I'm planning on RAID 6 for mass storage with either a single small NVME SSD or a Raid 1 with two small SATA SSDs for the OS, Plex and the transcoding directory

If you want hardware raid you'll be spending a lot for a decent sata card. The hardware raid on the boards isn't great but works better than the cheap cards you can find.

What about software RAID? From what I've seen, it used to be terrible but some are saying it's come a long way?
