Is the "be quiet! System Power 8 500W PSU" any good? I have been offered one (new/boxed) for £30 which seems cheap (is it likely/possible that this is a fake unit?)

Building a fake £30 PSU doesn't make sense. It's a good PSU, particularly at that price; according to be quiet! it was designed with the price-conscious PC builders in mind. It all depends on what you'll use it for.
