I am working on turning an old laptop into a media machine that I can mount to a TV for some light entertainment. The upgrades that I want to do are an upgrade to an SSD, a RAM upgrade, and a CPU upgrade. I've got the first two covered, I'm just having trouble finding a compatible CPU. The model number is x501a-hpd121h. All I want to know is, what is the best processer in terms of performance that I can fit in this thing. If you can't get me a specific answer, could you please let me know how I can get started in my research. Any Information helps!

Thanks,
Marc

Solution
Good news - the Pentium B980 is a socketed processor. You should be able to plop a i5-2520m or i7-2620m into it.

Cooling solution will likely not handle a 4-core i7-QM processor w/o overheating and throttling.
Hi

Cpu-z will tell you what cpu you currently have
Including if it is a socket or soldered onto the motherboard
The manufacturers web site probably tells you what range of cpu's were available for this model range

It would have helped us help you if you gave the manufacturers details rather than expect us to google the model number.

If the upgrade cpu model you choose has a higher power dissipation than the original one you may also need a different heatsink adding to difficulty and cost

The laptop is manufactured by ASUS.
