Are cheap motherboards good enough?

Solution

Read the reviews, and not just look at the 1-5 star/egg percentages.

For instance, 1 Stars from Amazon:
-I knew I was taking a chance ordering a used product but...

-Despite claiming to support newer CPUs, the board doesn't require them without a firmware update.
And unlike certain motherboards from reputable...
I don't go solely by that but it is a rough indicator. If you read a Tom's review, the reviewer was sent a verified working sample and didn't run it long enough to see if would die after a couple months.

Anyone who had that board that replies here is also just related their personal experience and a very small sample size.

What would you recommend the OP do to gain confidence in the reliability of that particular board?

And unlike certain motherboards from reputable manufacturers, this one doesn't support firmware upgrades without having a supported CPU installed first.
(as is almost every motherboard made of that era)

-Arrived with bent pins and was completely DOA
(buy used, this might happen)

-Bricked during bios update. Kept crashing before update

-Came in a package on the day it said it would arrive, but I waited to open it because I didn't have all the parts that I needed. When I did open it, the CPU socket was completely trashed (pins facing in every direction possible) and is not usable at all

-it was not the best with surround sound the pins were very weak and the pcie was terrible

-Ive had 3 of these motherboards. 2 died because of a bad power supply. The motherboard itself is what you would expect from a $60 motherboard, its pretty decent. However, MSI's RMA department is a joke.

Most of the 1 Stars from Amazon were DOA for whatever reason. And all from various 3rd parties, selling used boards.
Has nothing to do with the actual motherboard.

Amazon has a bad habit of conglomerating reviews from multiple resellers into the overall review list.
Has little to do with what you are actually seeing today and who you are buying from today.

Now...if you see a trend of issues for a particular part, then maybe there is an issue.
And if you see that same issue from independent review sites.

User/buyer reviews are absurdly bad.
