ASUS AC66U + IPVANISH + VPN = VERY SLOW ! Please help me

Hi guys,

I really would appreciate somebody in the know helping me here

.

I have a Asus N66U Router, and have just purchased IPVanish VPN client. I have tested the client from my PC and it works fully no download throttle, and its redirected my traffic.

Now i have gone to my router, and simply went to "VPN" > "OpenVPN" added my login details + a server address and its gone into a blue tick to confirm its connected.

I then lost internet connection and read on a guide somebody had changed the DNS to manual and entered 2 IP.s that were Google IP addresses, and it works..

The problem is the download speed is terrible i am now only pulling 8MBPS before i was pulling 55 and that was via the software installed on my PC .

Can anybody help or give me some advice please, i would really like to get this working.

I have noticed the router states a caution sign saying " THE WAN IP IS NOT EXTERNAL, SOME SERVICES MAY NOT WORK".

Any help would be greatly appreciated, my router knowledge is very poor.

The reason your VPN is slower when you use your router is because unlike your PC the router needs to be powerful to encrypt and decrypt data when on VPN. The ASUS AC66U is not powerful as your PC.

You're best of getting a more powerful router like the ASUS RT-AC88U.

Out of curiosity what speeds can you expect for the ac68? I don't want my speeds to be massively affected, currently I am only pulling around 10mbps from the 600mhz processor on the n66u

I don't have the RT-AC68U I wish I could answer your question. I do own the RT-AC88U and depending on the VPN client that is used, you can get decent speeds. On a 100/40 Mbps plan I have seen other posters in other forums get around 60 - 70 Mbps down and the upload doesn't really get affected that much.

But it all depends on the VPN client and where the server is. If you are using a Synolgy RT2600 that has a 1.7 dual core CPU and your VPN client doesn't have the best speeds and you're connected to a server outside your country, no amount of CPU grunt will increase your speeds.

So a combination of the best VPN client and location of the server will play a role on what speeds you can get.

Okay thank you for your help mate, how come routers are so low spec for the high broadband speeds we can get such as Virgin 200Mbps ?

Very interesting conversation here guys. Exactly what I am considering. I want to route certain devices through a VPN. Mostly fire tvs for streaming. And a few other devices now and again. I'm struggling to decide whether to install the VPN on my Asus RT-AC87U and use selective client vpn routing or to individually install VPN clients on each device.

I have Virgin Vivid 200 and get a constant 250 mbps wired and a good 180-215 on 5G wifi. We could be streaming up to 2 x HD movies at once. I'm not sure if I'll get enough power from the router to do this but also I hate to pay for and be used to great speed and then be limited to sub 100 or even sub 50 I've heard reported using the router vpn.

There's also the potential that the AC87U is more powerful than the fire sticks / firetvs maybe?

I am sure the only solution is to try the router version and then try the client versions and compare the results and manage to do this within the likes of the 7 day money back guarantee with IP Vanish for example. Probably end up with them all installed and setup and then I can switch from router vpn to client vpn as required.
