The recently released RX 580 8GB looks like a safe bet and its at a good price - 250 pounds more or less. However after browsing a couple second hand websites I've found I can buy a second hand GTX 980 ti for around the same prices as well but I'm not sure if its reliable and safe to go that route. I know the GTX 980 ti is 40% faster than the RX 580 and 110% faster than my current GPU but I'm curious to see what you guys think I should do.

And what are the chances there would be a better bet in the new VEGA or Volta gpus that are going to be released in a couple months - I have no intention in upgrading until the end of this year when it's my bday and christmas so I can wait till then

Windows 10 64 bit
NZXT H440 Red/black
Maximus VII Hero
Intel core i5 4690k @ 4.6 GHz
Sapphire R9 280X @ 1.2 GHz
Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (4x4)
Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB
WD Caviar Green 1TB (x2)
Gigabyte 800W PSU
Asus Xonar DX sound card
NZXT GRID+ V2

Well here's the thing, everyone is talking about waiting for Vega, but AMD seems to keep the mouths quiet for some time. Remember when people said "Wait for Zen" and then they changed it to Ryzen? So you can wait, but it may not help. That 980 Ti for $250 is a steal...but there is no way to test it out without feeling "ripped" off. I never recommend second parts. First, if YOU are building a machine, why would you want someone else's hand on it. Second, you can never trust everyone on the internet.

My recommendation? Are you noticing a slow down in games? Is something not working properly? Do you really need to upgrade? Also what type of monitor do you have? What quality are you aiming for? I say go for the sure bet. If the RX 580 will suit your needs fo r1080p gaming, then for it. Other ways, wait until Vega comes out (maybe).

I think it's very likely that Vega parts will be high end at first. So I doubt that Vega is going to be relevant to anyone in the market for a 580 price range card. That leaves the used 980 Ti. I have no problem buying used parts, but 'too good to be true' usually is. If 980 Tis in general are in your price range, fine. If it's just THIS 980 Ti, then I'd say no.

The other issue is why are you upgrading. What performance numbers are you chasing? That'll help in deciding what specific card you need.

I've seen 10+ GTX 980 tis available for the price range i'm looking for. I have 3x 1080p monitors (5760x1080) and my pc specs are just getting old and is struggling at running newer titles such as Watch Dogs 2 and such. Im aiming at running newer titles at max settings at 1080p (1920x1080) and I'm just trying to see what my best options are. If it's getting a RX 580 8GB or waiting for a new Vega or Volta gpu then I'll go for that but I just noticed it's possible for me to get a GTX 980 ti and that was the fastest GPU you could get a year ago.

I just miss the days where my rig could max out any game and get 60+ fps and I've finally realised It's time for me to upgrade. Assuming my CPU is fine as it's overclocked to 4.6 GHz and it's a top end i5 4th gen, It currently has faster single core performance than an average i7 6700k and scores 10,000 on passmark.
