Need help please.

My computer was running fine. It crashed. When I brought it back up it says "Reboot and select proper boot device" the hard drives installed were no longer being displayed as Primary IDE master and its "not detected"

What do I do? do i need to format my pc?

I'm a noob when it comes to tech. Pls help me.

If your comp can no longer see the hard drive, there are 3 possible causes:
>motherboard header failure
>data or power cable failure
>disk failure
Ad 1 and 2: Turn off comp, turn off power switch on PSU (or unplug from outlet), open case, disconnect IDE cable from disk, take another IDE cable and connect it to disk and to another IDE port on motherboard; also disconnect power cable from disk and connect another plug (there should be several on the cable). Turn on and check if system can see the disk. If no change, probably disk has failed (and considering it's age it would not be a surprise).
