Do you already have this CPU, or are you thinking of buying it?
I'm thinking about buying it. Also thought about the i7-4790k, but then I'd have to get a new mobo + ram.
If you're currently on LGA 1155 then the 3770k is a great choice, there's no need to go for 4790k since as you mentioned you'll need a new mobo and RAM and the performance difference in the 3770k and 4790k is not big so it isn't worth it. If you can afford to buy only a new processor then the 3770k is worth every penny, go for it.

Well my mobo + GPU are definitely good enough + I got enough RAM. So I might take your advice and go for the i7-3770k. My 2500k has been a good companion, but it is time for an upgrade^^
