No internet after reinstalling Win7

Hi, I know there are many posts about this, but nearly all of the solutions are about drivers, and I believe that is not the problem here.

Short version: internet works, I reinstall PC, internet does not work, even on another laptop.

Today I reinstalled Windows 7 on an old machine. Internet was working fine before, and what may have been the mistake is that I did not disconnect ethernet cable before reinstalling. The motherboard is MSI (I think) and there was a CD with drivers (Intel), I let it install everything right away, then I noticed internet was not working (invalid IP configuration).

So I tried ipconfig /release and /renew, it said something about DHCP (sorry for lack of detail, I was in a rush). Strange is, I tried plugging it in my laptop (100% works elsewhere), but it could not connect to internet either. So I believe it has to do with configuration on that port. I do not have physical access to the router.

One additional thing, probably irrelevant. When reinstalling, there was a system partition, about 200MB. I did not touch it, I formated the other partition and installed on that one.

Any ideas?

Well, after re-readding, I was thinking the drivers issue. But you said that TWO computers could not connect to the Internet? What type of network is it where you don't have access to the router? This may help narrow down the probably. I would still re-install the drivers directly from the website and not rely on Windows to search fo rit.

If both computers wont connect to internet via the same etherent cable problem is the cable or the router/switch it is connected to.

Now with the laptop, was it plugged into power or on battery?
Some laptops dissable the ethernet port in attempt to save battery life so make sure the ethernet port is on and that it is trying to get a connection/IP address when you plug it into laptop.

My mother is renting a workplace, she has a cable from a locked box leading to her office. Will try downloading some drivers.

As I mentioned, it was working fine before reinstalling and I did not mess with the cable or anything else. I tried the laptop when I came home and it does connect through ethernet even on battery.

Turns out the provider has some protection in place, so when you plug the cable in a new PC, you need to wait for an hour before being connected to the internet. The way around this was static IPv4 configuration.
