Hey guys,

I have been working on spec'n out my new PC HERE for anyone interested in my specific needs, but I am struggling to sift through all the technical data for the differences between motherboards, and what benefits vs. cost, etc. I am essentially trying to get the best performance/functionality/reliability for the least amount of my dollar.

Things I think I would like the board to be compatible with:
- Function is much more important to me than Form. w/ or w/o RGB lighting.
- I have selected a mid tower case, so MicroATX or ATX board size is fine for me.
- Z270 Chipset w/ good Overclocking (~5.0GHz) potential on a i7-7700K Chip.
- good/great audio (S/PDIF optical out would be nice, But is not the sole decision factor)
- Good Bios
- dependable performance

Compatibility with my build:

I am a little more interested in the technical side of things, so if you could provide a brief description of why you recommend this board or that board, it will save us both some time up front. I am a newb, and my understanding of electronics is a little weaker at the moment then I would like. I have been reading and reading catching up on all this tech from the last 17 or so years since the last time I built a PC. But Im struggling to decipher between marketing and actual technical difference between motherboards. Any help is appreciated. Thank you guys in advance

Thank you for posting this up, but I am curious of the difference between this board and the MSI board I was just looking at...

MSI Gaming Pro Carbon Board
Asus STRIX E Gaming Board

Both seem to be about equal with the Asus Strix gaming having 2 channel 802.11AC WIFI; but it is also comparably $26 more both via outletpc. which is the general cost of a 802.11AC wifi adapter. So, taking that into consideration, and the point of posting this thread, what is the real world difference between the Board you recommended, the MSI board I am currently looking at, and any other brand board with nearly the same features? I guess this is where my confusion is currently lying in my hunt for a MOBO for my build. I want the BEST board for my needs, at the lowest cost. I am trying to base that decision off technical data, but that may not be the best approach. But with this being my first PC build in quite some time, I'm not sure if the difference truly lies in hardware, or BIOS firmware, or what the actual tangeble difference between one to the next is... If that makes any since?

So, would you mind humoring me, and explain why you recommended the ASUS first? I am trying to understand the differences from one to the next and I am coming up short. Perhaps it is simply "marketing" differences? ease of BIOS use? real world functionality? Manufacturer personal preference? etc?

vs.

I have decided the comparison really was Apples to Apples as far as actual performance. Reviewing the BIOS tools; the MSI tools seem to be a bit more refined, The MSI board also had features that stuck out a little more to me, like the gold plated audio, USB & DDR4 boost, and the 10 phase power design. Weather or not it makes a difference, it sure seemed like the better option for me than a nearly identical board (minus those specific features) whos only real benefits/distinctions seem to be the ability to add 3d-printed add-ons... which for my purpose; is completely useless.

Both boards are probably great! But I made the best educated decision I could based off functionality, combined offical reviews, consumer product reviews and amazon reviews.

Thanks for the help! the Mobo has been ordered and should be here Wednesday or Thursday.
