Would a GTX 1060 3gb perform in 1440p for about 6 months to a year?

Hello all,

I am building a new PC and pretty much waiting for Vega to come out at this time (I have a freesync monitor and would prefer to have AMD over Nvidia long term for that).

I saw that the 1060 3gb is on sale (with rebate, plus free game) for $150 on NewEgg, and was curious if this would hold me over on a 1440p 60hz monitor until Vega comes out and the kinks get worked out.

Should I go ahead and pull the trigger, or would it be better for me to wait?

That's a great deal for a 1060 3GB but my only concern would be no FreeSync and the 3GB VRAM... 3GB is already the boundary in 1080p, it would be even worse at 1440p. And when you go over the VRAM limit you're gonna get FPS drops and stutter like mad. I'd advise sticking with a 4GB+ to be safe unless you are okay with sticking at lower textures and other settings that are more intensive of the VRAM.

Alternatively you can get an RX 580 on sale at the moment for $199 on Amazon, much more powerful and of course you can utilise FreeSync. I think you are right, and it would probably be better to spend the extra $50 and just get the higher performance.

Is it pretty easy to sell a used GPU online? I would be much more willing to pull the trigger if I could sell this thing back to the public for around $100 after using it...

The 3GB VRAM is pretty bad for 1440p. It might almost be better to get a 4GB GTX 1050 Ti at that point. But for a temporary holdover, maybe look around for a used R9 290? You'd have better performance and Freesync support, and it should cost less.

Sadly, I just looked at I can't find a used R9 290 on Newegg :-(.

I would expect a RX 580 to sell for pretty well if you buy Vega within the next say 3-5 months. That's only a little age on the GPU and it will still be the current generation, to keep it in perfect sale condition i suggest you keep the box, receipt, etc. To maximise its value and reliability in a sale. I'd expect you to get at least $150 for a slightly used card in perfect condition? (don't quote me on this i'm not familiar with U.S pricing) ;)

Nevermind, I see that Tom's Hardware has a resell part listed. I think that means I am going to do it! (I may even go for a 8gb, since looking it may only be like $20 more expensive).
