Has anyone successfully cloned a HDD from one computer to another computer with an SSD on W7?

I fried the motherboard on my Fujitsu T901 hybrid laptop. Couldn't find a decent used one, so I bought a used T902 with an SSD. I would like to clone the HDD from my T901 to the SSD on the T902. Different mobo, chipset, etc., on the 902. Acronis True Image 2017 has a Universal Restore Utility which claims to be able to clone a drive to another with dissimilar hardware. Does anyone have experience with this sort of process? If so, did it work? Thank you.

Solution
Cloning a HDD to an SSD is a piece of cake. You'll want to ensure that you align for 4K sector size, but even if you don't it'll still work (just with increased wear on the SSD).

Getting Windows 7 to boot on an entirely different computer is another story. I've rarely ever seen that work, but with enough messing around you might get it to. Perhaps Acronis and Macrium have updated their software to strip out the extra drivers from trying to load when it first boots so Windows and install its defaults. From Windows 8 onward it actually will just work on it's own if you migrate the HDD.

Both Acronis and Macrium claim to be able to do this.

Since you have fried hardware....try it. It can't hurt to try.
Report back and let us know how it goes.

Well, you haven't answered the crucial question...

Does your present system with the new components boot without incident and does the system then function problem-free? If your answer is "yes" then there would seem to be no reason you could not clone the contents of your HDD to your SSD, PROVIDED THE SSD HAS SUFFICIENT DISK-SPACE CAPACITY TO CONTAIN THE TOTAL DATA CONTENTS OF THE HDD.

Just to be clear...we are talking about two different concepts.

1. Cloning from HDD to SSD. Generally no problem if space meets requirements.

2. Cloning from HDD to SSD to go in a whole different system.
Acronis and Macrium claim to be able to do this.
Moving an OS to a different system may or may not work. Clone, or physical drive movement.
I've not heard any first hand accounts of attempts...success or fail.

If this actually works, great.

As said...since you have the busted hardware....try it.
Be our guinea pig. Let us know how it works.

Yes to the crucial question. And yes to the 2nd question. The new SSD is twice the size of the old HDD.

Thanks, Jared - going to give it a try today.
