I currently pushed my i5 6600k to 4.2 GHz and the temperatures I am getting in the cores are topping out at 72c I was wondering if this is a safe temp or if I should lower my overclock. I did a stress test with CPUID CPU-Z for 10 minutes to see if the temperature would rise and to see if it was stable. I would like to thank anyone who helps and sorry if I used poor grammar I have always been bad with my grammar and spelling.

my PC specs
CPU
Intel Core i5 6600K
FAN
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
RAM
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz
Motherboard
ASUS ATX DDR4 LGA 1151 Motherboard Z170-E
GPU
ASUS Dual-Fan Radeon Rx 480 4GB OC Edition

Solution

Did you find that it was unstable at 4.2 GHz with any voltage less than that? I just ask because that seems a little high. I have a 6700K at 4.5 GHz with 1.215V. Obviously every CPU overclocks differently though.

Thanks for the reply it's my first time overclocking so I'm a bit nervous when it comes to messing with my PC, I built it a few months ago and it's my first build ever so far I have been happy with it but I want to make sure I get the most out of my parts.

CPU Z is not a good stress test, even AIDA64 is better than it and that doesn't say much. Try Prime95, run small FFT. Anyway I would think you could try leaving voltage as is and push the clock more. Your mobo has 4 power phase if I'm reading this right so it's not a good Overclocking board.

I have not tried lower when I overclocked my mobo auto raised the voltage I could try with lower voltage and I probably should to keep things cooler
