I am thinking of getting a Rift or Vive at some point in the next 6-9 months. I recently just has to rebuild my pc because of a dead mb. I decided to go with a high end i5 processor.

Does it make sense to update now to an i7?

Also Is it possible to sell a CPU online? I'd sell my i5 to fund an i7.

Solution
eBay is the best place to sell a CPU. Use the auction method to allow the populace to drive the price up.

To answer the bulk of your question, an i7 is going to yield better performance in VR depending on the game and other factors. The i5 will do just fine but the i7 will ensure smooth frame rates at better graphics settings.

Yes. Online classifieds work. If you go with a retailer like ebay or amazon you will have to deal with fees and shipping. Yes, I think an upgrade to an i7 is worth it for VR gaming. I have an i5 4690. I do see the 7700 as a possible solution but I don't have the money for it. I will only be upgrading my GPU from a 970 to a 1070 or better. I've decided to purchase a Vive when I can afford it.
