all games suddenly run at less than 10 FPS

All of my games are suddenly running at single digit FPS when they ran perfectly fine before. I was playing Fallout 4 just fine for few hours, and then suddenly the FPS tanked to 7-8. I quit then game, and another game does the same thing to me.

And I see the above spikes in MSI afterburner, but don't understand what's going on.

My specs are
i7-6700K
GTX 1080
16GB of Ram

The temperature all appear normal, not exceeding 63 at top for GPU, and 70 for CPU cores. I haven't OCed anything.

I haven't updated to the new driver since this one is working fine (at least until now). Haven't installed new programs either.

Really appreciate your help. Thanks

You should update your drivers. Also, I would say there are two possible factors that could cause this issue. Number one, your hardware is failing i.e. your GPU. Second, there is something running in the background that is sucking down your resources like none other. You could have some sort of malware eating at your system resources. Perform a virus scan and see what turns up.

Can you take a screenshot of your "Processes" tab in Task Manager when this happens and post it here? Make sure the screenshot is from the time that the FPS is running low.

my Asus 1080 is purchased less than a year ago, last July...really hope it's not failing already LOL.
I don't have any background process running other than the habitual ones like Bitdefender which never caused any problem before. But I will look into viruses, that sounds like a distinct possibility (curious that BD didn't detect anything.
Thanks

There is nothing particularly taxing other than the game itself. Other processes are mostly not consuming much memory and cpu power at all.
