I am planning to do a clean install on my Windows 7 HP 32 bit desktop computer and, as part of the process, would like to know how to determine the location of the page file and how to make it contiguous.
I would like to be able to increase its size but do not know where to find the location of this setting.
Also, should I update Windows before or after the clean install and should it be automatic or manual.
Lastly, should I put the firewall up first?

Most defragmenting programs will show a graphical representation of your hard drive. The pagefile is considered a system file and can't be moved, so usually shows up as red (or whatever color the defragment program uses for unmovable system files).

While having it contiguous is best, having it broken into a few fragments won't make much difference. You just want to avoid having it broken into dozens (or thousands) of different fragments. Just disable the pagefile, defragment the drive so there's lots of empty unfragmented space, then re-create a fixed-size pagefile.

There is no upgrade path from 32-bit Windows to 64-bit Windows. You have to wipe and reinstall. So if your computer can use the 64-bit version and there's a chance you'll upgrade its memory to more than 4 GB, you should install the 64-bit version right now. The same Windows license key will work for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
