Two R9 380x will be slightly slower in games as two RX480 offer more or less the same performance as a 1080 and a 390 approximately is equal to a 480. The 380x is slower than both cards. Hence, the 1080 will be faster

Meh. $320 can almost get you to a 1070 (they now start around $340) and I rather have a single 1070 than two 380xs.

What resolution are you intending to use? If you're going high-end to try to get into 4K, the 4 GB of VRAM is a problem. Games like Far Cry 4, Battlefield 1, and Grand Theft Auto V already can go well over that when you're talking 4K.

Now days games are using more vram. So crossfire or sli on slower card will not do the job...If gaming is concern always go for single higher end card..don't go for better deal. If you can afford go for 1060 or higher cox you have a better cpu

I found this gtx 1060 for about 350 bucks here and I think you should go with it instead of the 980 as it will be better for future gaming using dx12 and vulkan and for more VRAM.
