Hello there Users of TomsHardware!

I recently got given an old DELL Dimension 520 from my grandparents and decided to see how much performance I could squeeze out of this old machine that I use to play on when I was younger.

I did a little bit of research and managed to find that the motherboard socket was LGA775, after another quick look around I came across the Intel Core 2 Duo E8600. I managed to find this CPU on Ebay and ordered it. Upon fitting the CPU everything went perfectly fine...right until I booted the PC. I noticed straight away that something wasn't right due to the excessive fan speed from booting the system along with there being nothing being displayed on my monitor. I have since taken the new CPU out and replaced the old one that was in there when I got the PC and the system has booted fine.

I have also upgraded the RAM to 1.5GB DDR2 from 512MB of DDR2 along with placing the old intel celeron d 346 CPU back into the system.

I am completely stumped as to why this motherboard has not accepted this new CPU. I have been thinking that it was either the power supply OR the motherboard needs to be flashed?

I have included some links and useful information about the system below:

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Look in my sig. Then read my tutorial How to Overrclock Dell BTX Computers. Click the CPUZ link in my sig. then click the chart image. WG864 is the E520 MB#.
I've had mine up to 4GHz but benchmark at 3.73GHz. Only older AMD GPUs work. Basically R9-285, R9-3xx or newer cant display the Dell BIOS screen. Get a Legacy BIOS Nvidia card.
A QX6800 will go 3.45Ghz fairly easily. A QX6800 SLACP (G0 stepping) is needed to go faster.
Another fan option is the AFC1512DG 150x50mm monster that fits right in with Velcro and duct tape.
