I'm planning to replace the power jack of my Medion Erazer x6821 laptop because it doesn't charge anymore. I'm trying to replace it by unsoldering the old one and soldering the new one back in.

Unfortunately, my laptop model isn't that popular and it's hard to find specific parts. But there are parts available of other models (like the x6812, x6813) that looks exactly like mine, so does the power jacks.

So my question is:
Is it okay to solder a power jack on a motherboard of another model which looks exactly the same? And also, it's my first time soldering on a motherboard, so are there other things I need to be careful about?

Solution
As long as it's the same generation of laptop models, then most likely yes.

Scrape the pads a little bit to clean out the old solder. Finding a second person to hold the power jack in place will make it much easier for you. That's how I soldered on some detached wires in a earbud, anyways.

Also, buy or borrow a good soldering station with a fine tip built for working on boards. Don't use one of those $10 solder pencils with a broad tip. You'll also need some solder wick to take off excess solder when you remove the original jack. Watch some youtube videos to see how it's done.
