Solution
you need only worry about matching the 771945 and make sure that both the patient and donor either both have the U12 present or both don't have a U12 present, storing the ROM inside the controller.

What are the problems with the drive that makes you certain that the PCB is the point of failure?

Yes, you need to move the U12 chip from the patient to the donor. If you kill the ROM, you risk making the cost of professional recovery a lot higher than the few hundred bucks it is right now, assuming that the head preamp isn't also damaged from whatever surge took out the PCB.
