Hello everyone

I build a PC 6 years ago (a few days ago actually) and wanted some advice on upgrading.
My current rig

Asus Sabertooth 990FX (I got this before r2.0 came out so... 1.0?)
AMD Phenom II 2.8 (OC to 3.0GHz)
16gb Ram
GTX 1070
700w PSU

With a game soon to come out, after seen benchmark scores with the 1070 is supposed to be on average 12,000+ and mine is at 6,000, I found out my CPU is bottlenecking my GTX. I was going to just upgrade my CPU and keep my AM3+ mobo, but Ryzen really caught my interest.

Think this'll be a good build, or maybe what else would be a good build (a plus if the mobo supports SLI) that'll last me another good 5 or so years for gaming and 3D design (I love more cores cause it'll cut my renders down really quick)

MSI X370
2x 8gb Ram

Ryzen 7 1700
or
Ryzen 7 1700X

As for PSU, would 700w still be good or be safe and upgrade to 900w or 1000w?

I don't plan on doing much 4K gaming (maybe not until SC Remaster comes out) but I'm using 21:9 display and may add two more cause pfff why not lol but that's not immediate. More or less my "dream" build if I had a bigger budget.

Solution
Found an amazing deal on a 32GB RAM kit, scratch frequency, this is $50 below any other 32GB kit and about $100 under any high frequency one.
Save the extra cash towards a new GPU upgrade.

Your choices look good. Either CPU will be fine. If you don't mind overclocking get the 1700 as it'll reach 1700x speeds and maybe even 1800x speeds with a good OC. If you're not grab the 1700x. Mine is paired with an MSI gaming pro carbon mobo. The only other thing to watch out for is you'll also need DDR4 RAM so make sure to check out MSI.com support page and find out which RAM is supported on the MOBO you choose as Ryzen is still teething when it comes to RAM compatibility.

Thanks both of you for the help. OCing is pretty confusing to me so yeah, I'll just go with the 1700X. I was planning on getting the Mobo's cap on ram but would ram speed matter much for games? I know it will for Photoshop and Maya lol.

With Ryzen RAM speed does matter actually. Ryzen is composed of 2 CCX units made up of 4 cores each and connected by what AMD calls "infinity fabric" it basically passes information between the 2 CCX's and it's directly related to RAM speed. I'd say though that with a GTX 1070 and a 1700x you could see up to a 10 FPS jump depend on the game by going from 2133Mhz to 3000Mhz RAM. It's by no means required and you'll probably never notice the difference. The important part is making sure the RAM is compatible with the board. If it's not it may have trouble running at it's rated speed. For example I have Corsair LPX 3000Mhz RAM in my PC but it's only running at 2133Mhz because it's not officially supported yet.

That is a pretty sweet deal for 32GB of RAM
