Hey there Guys!

so yesterday i got a few old PC's for like 10 buck NZD and low and behold i find a P5Q Pro upon starting my research on the MOBO I heard that it can take an xeon if you mod the BIOS (which i havnt done before so should be fun) i thought i would ask you guys what xeon should i put in it ?

im looking at a X3220 or a X5450 at the moment.

I will most likely use the rid for light gaming on fallout4 and sim4 along with internet surfing and movies will most likely throw my 750 TI 2gb OC ed in it

i have also been find information on OCíng an xeon can any one confirm you can do this on a P5Q pro MOBO ????

Solution
If you haven't yet bought the S771 Xeon I would strongly suggest the few extra bucks for a "fully modded" one where extra notches are cut in the sides and the mod is performed by pad welding rather than a sticker. X5460 is best because it has a multiplier of 9.5 so you can reach 3.8GHz at only 400 FSB.

X5450 may have a 50% higher rated TDP than E5450 but in E0 stepping both are exactly the same as a Q9650 as all three use ~72w under load at stock speed.

The P5Q Pro is confirmed compatible with X5470, X5460, E5450, E5462, E5430, and E5440

please note that the X3220 is an LGA 775 and the X5450 is a LGA 771 so i would have to do a little mod to get the X5450 working and please don't tell me to do i new build i got most of the parts for free and can pick up an xeon for 40 NZD =D

thanks for the reply mate and the info on the mobo!

I think ill go with the X5460 just need to hunt one down first! found one one Ali express for cheap as seems to be already modded too
but iv never ordered a CPU from them before tho (link is below)

I can't find any X5460 locally in my country for sale can only find a X5450 for about 50 NZD.

so if I OC'd the X5460 to 3.8 how would it compare to the likes of a i5 2500k ? or what would it
be comparable to ?

Looks OK and a great price, ask for SLBBA to get the newer E0 stepping. Most of the eBay sellers ship from China anyway as that's where all the large recyclers are.

For games a high-clocked 45nm Core 2 Quad is about the same as a dual-core with HT Sandy/Ivy i3. Games and compression (Winzip) are the most sensitive applications to memory latency and bandwidth so it's no surprise a FSB and DDR2 aren't going to fare too well. For just about everything else not using AVX it will be much faster than that, but note at 3.8GHz it will use ~160w for just the chip which does not include the memory controller (The P45 chipset uses another 26w for that).

thanks for the great information ill be sure to get an SLBBA one.

oh i see i don't shop that much on Ebay they always wanted the world to ship it to new zealand
so having another place to find pc parts is great !

oh i see so it would be as good as a 2nd/3rd gen i3 ? thats not to bad i just went from a i3 2100 to an i5 2310
on my little gaming rig.

Oh yes i did forget to think about memory speed and what not but shouldn't be to much of a worry im sure this PC
will end up on my main TV in the living room for movies.

power shouldn't be to much of a issue i have a thermaltake psu @ 600w and a astec psu @ 750w i can use in this build.

unsure if i should water cool the CPU with a corsair H55i to bring the temps down hear that the H55i isn't that much better
than a good air cooler
