why do the AM4 motherboards have monitor outputs if the Ryzen CPUs have no graphics support?

I just read a few threads where folks were asking whether a discrete graphics card was absolutely required for a Ryzen build.

The unanimous answer was yes, with the explanation that Ryzen has no graphics support.

I had assumed that that meant the X370 and B350 chipsets would have to provide the graphics support, but what folks are saying belies that assumption.

So, to clarify, is there no graphics support whatsoever on these new AM4 motherboards? And, if not, why would they have HDMI, DVI and/or VGA outputs?

Solution
APU = Accelerated Processing Unit.

AMD speak for a GPU+CPU combined.

Whwras before you had the socket am3+ boards for straight fx cpu's & the fm2/fm2+ boards for the apu's the AM4 Is a combined socket for either.

Where do they fit in with the ryzen architecture ??

Who knows, I'd imagine the best you're going to see generally is a straight quad core with graphics close or equal to the new RX 550 gpu at the highest end.

Amd are being rather tight fisted with any specific details.

Yes amd and Intel have made them for years, look for any of the a8/a10 AMD older processors or basically any non x99 Intel chip. The graphics are on the CPU, not the motherboard anymore. In the next month or two the ryzen r3s will release (quad core no, hyperthreading most likely) and then either together with or a bit after the ones with graphics will launch. I suspect the first apus will be mobile, as there are decent margins to be had there for the same silicon, which has been what AMD has done with ryzen so far

With absolute certainty yes mate, second half of this year.
As I said though ,specifics are unknown.
I persally think youll probably be looking at a straight quad ( It would be nice if its also hyperthreaded but I have my doubts personally ) with graphics close to the newly relased rx 550 - they will with absolute certainty be able to fit that into a 95w tdp.

The issue? Its likely to come in at a higer pricepoint than the current kaby i5's in my opinion.
Which is perfctly fine IF you have no plans to add a gpu in the future & are into light or low settings gaming ( you would be after all getting $70-80 worth of gpu grunt included in the price)

Otherwise I would imagine an i5 would be a more sensible purchase.

We will though just have to wait & see.

What is throwing me a little bit is the plethora of boads that have vga ports when polaris (which is likely what the bristol ridge apu's will be based on) has absolutely no native analog output.
& then only a couple of really really expensive x370 boards actually have dp outputs.

Seeing as these chips will be pretty much ideal for 4k home cinema setups it kind of throws me a bit on whether they are actually going to manage 4k 60htz (not for gaming obviously, just for video use )

Apart from the new Ryzen processors with APU's, the AM4 socket also supports the processors with the Excavator architecture which are APU's which support on board graphics? or something like that... I'm not familiar with the exact names of the older gen AMD processors.

Sometime this year, AMD will release the Bristol ridge APU, Socket AM4 (with what they call the Excavator Core and R7 Graphics)

Early Next Year will be the prize APU's named Raven Ridge, it will have Zen cores with AMD's new Vega graphics cores.

That motherboard is intended for high-end gamers, who would always be using a discrete GPU. So putting video connections on the motherboard is a waste.

So your APU will work only as a CPU on that motherboard, and you will still need to buy a GPU. Perhaps you can return or exchange the 2400g and get a first-gen Ryzen CPU?

Alternatively, you can sell the X370i motherboard and put the proceeds towards something like an ASRock AB350 Pro4.
