Lower FPS in Fallout 4 than it should be

Hi guys!

I reainstalled Fallout 4 on my laptop like a week ago with all of the updates. I soon noticed that my fps is significantly lower than what benchmarks would suggest and what i remember. I first installed the game without any updates last summer and i could easily run it on high/ultra in 720p or 1080p (in 720p i could easily add AA without drops). Then after a couple of weeks i just deleted it for some reason. Now that im back in the game with all of the updates i get insane drops in cities, but the "wasteland" areas are not so smooth either. I turned down godrays and so on but i didnt have to mind that at all at my first experience with the game.

My specs:

Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz
nVidia gtx 960m 4gb
8gb ram

I like the new features but i would rather go back to early builds than running the game in complete low settings (it currently sets my settings to the lowest possible as default) because i think its nonsense and random drops even make it harder to fight a battle and so on...

So the main question is if going back to early builds may fix this issue or it may be something else.

Fallout 4 has been updated with a newer graphics backend, more or less. nVidia even did their own "DLC" to showcase the 10-series GPU's; chances are the game engine itself was updated to support all that stuff, meaning that older cards like yours (and my 980Ti to a lesser extent) may struggle a bit more.

I would say upgrade your GPU, but you said it's a laptop...you might actually just be SoL...

I see. Well I deleted the game and reinstalled the original build but i noticed the slowness right at the start. And my laptop generally slowed down to a serious extent today so it might be a general problem. And i dont think the update would be so serious that the gpu now only handles low default in 720p at playable frames.
Anyway thank you very much for your answer, i'll get back after i sorted any other possible problem out...

It clearly is a heat issue now. Today it started putting out heat even when its idle and everythings slower now. I recently reinstalled windows because after an update realtek HD audio used to do this and every time i had to shut it down in task manager after startup. It was all right after reinstall for weeks. Now the issue seems to be very similar but i dont know whats causing it now... I noticed it was putting out a bit more heat over the week but i thought im being paranoid after this realtek crapfest. Now i dont know whats causing it, but few minutes after startup it starts putting out significant heat.
Im sorry this got off topic so fast...

This isn't off-topic, you asked what's causing the lower FPS, and now we seem to have arrived at the answer to that question. Now we just need a solution.

Chances are that your laptop is somewhat clogged with dust. If you don't feel comfortable opening it (which I completely wouldn't blame you for, I hate opening laptops), take it to a local computer shop and ask them to clean the dust out for you.

If it's still heating up, buy a cooling pad for it. I recommend this 3-fan unit by Targus for your laptop, since you use it for gaming. I had nothing but a Toshiba laptop for five years, and it would BSOD after two hours of World of Tanks due to heat. Bought that cooling pad and it never crashed again.
