Hard Drive RPM?

Hi, I just bought a WD 10EURX, 1 TB hard drive to replace the current drive, looking at the 64 MB cache, and alleged 7200 RPM.Just got it, and the on the box it said 5400 RPM, and after checking a few sites some list it as 7200 RPM, some 5400 RPM.What is the actual RPM on this drive?BTW, one site had the same model listed in two different spots, one stating a 7200 RPM, the other a 5400 RPM.Any help would be greatly appreciated!Thanks.

The Western Digital 10EURX uses what WD calls "IntelliPower". Their Green drives and AV drives go with that. It's supposed to be a way of having a variable speed drive so that it uses less power. This pretty much means 5400 RPM. Western Digital is making a huge push towards 5400 RPM drives with their new models as well if you want a 7200 RPM drive, make sure to look up the exact spec sheet from WD directly and not rely on the online seller to have the correct information.

So, it sounds like the drive has a 'top end' of 7200 RPM, but will operate antwhere from 5400 to 7200 depending on what the drive thinks it should be at?Is there a way to set the drive to stay at top speed of 7200 RPM, regardless of 'intellipower'?Thank you for the help.

Not that I've ever seen. If you're using it for its intended purpose for like a DVR drive, then the speed honestly isn't going to be an issue. Unless you'd using it for an OS boot drive, you'll rarely if ever notice the speed difference.

It was going to be the drive for my computer.They initially listed it as 7200 RPM, with a 64 MB cache, which would be really good, but they DIDN'T mention it's basically a variable speed drive, and after looking online for what people were saying about the 'intellipower' drives, they sound like a nightmare for pc use.Thanks for the help!
