For what purpose is nas really worth it? If I have to store something just for backup like my YouTube videos should I use nas or a cloud storage which gives unlimited storage at 5$ per month. I am kinda confused as if to buy or not and why so can anyone help me? Thank you

It really depends on your storage, ISP speed and security requirements. For instance, if you have lots of videos/movies, it may get expense to store TB's of files in the cloud. Also, depending on the speed of your ISP, it may not stream smoothly. In this case, a NAS is a great solution. On the other hand, if you're just backing up a PC and you're OK with the security of the cloud vendor you're using, the cloud is a good way to go.

For me, a NAS box is absolutely 'worth it'. I have a Qnap TS-453a.

It holds the nightly backups of all my systems, several TB of movie/music/shared docs.
Before long, it will take over the actual HTPC functionality, and play directly to the TV and receiver.

YMMV, though.

a NAS is for if you want to be able to access the same files from any computer on the network. If you only want to share a few files and internet bookmarks then a flash drive in the USB port of many routers is slow but may give adequate performance.

If you only have one computer or are primarily backing up files then a USB attached external drive is less expensive local storage that may be faster than a cloud provider and allows access without internet.

Based on your given use case, no. Use something like Arq to encrypt your data and shove it in the cloud.
Others, myself included, have large media libraries making the cloud inefficient at storing data. I keep an off-site encrypted backup on Amazon Drive, but I love my home server.
I run a website, various in-house services and Plex.
If you don't need anything like that, then a NAS device will take a long time to pay for itself, if you can get unlimited backups at 5$ a month.

A backup is not worth much unless it's off-site. I keep a Raid5 system with local backups and cloud backups. If he wants to be safe, he really needs an off-site backup.
