This is a little different from other EFI related problems,I have looked through other threads and found no solution. My PC crashed roughly a week ago, and ever since I have been unable to boot Win7 from my HDD on startup - instead bluescreening.

To solve the issue I attempted a fresh install of windows; I have a USB flash drive with a copy of Win10 as an ISO which I intended to use as a replacement for Win7 currently on the HDD. However, when trying to boot from the USB in UEFI mode I'm daced with a black screen reading "EFI Shell Version 2.3.1 [4,653]" with additional text underneath. Since encountering this issue I have done the following to attempt a fix:

  • Reset CMOS battery,
Changed copy of Win10 on USB,
Used flash drive with multiple USB slots,
Moved both my HDD SATA connectors to different slots on the motherboard. (I didn't expect this to work but saw someone recommend in a different thread with similar issues).

As far as I know, my components are all working, however, my system is aging and component failure could be a factor.

Note: I still have full use of Keyboard/Mouse and can enter BIOS without any issue, its only upon booting that I have the EFI error.

My Rig:

  • Intel i3 2120,
    MSI z77 1155 g43,
    Kingston HyperX 2x4gb DIMMS,
    Nvidia 570,
    1x500gb HDD, 1x200gb HDD.

You cant just put windows 10 iso on a usb stick and expect to boot from it, theres a procdure to follow.

easiest way to do this is get on a working computer, I figure you have one as you've posted here, and download Windows usb/dvd creation tool from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

you will also need the windows 10 iso and plug your USB stick into the working computer, now launch the tool and follow the instuctions, it will take about 10 mins to create the bootable USB stick depending on the speed of the computer your using.

once its finished you can boot from it.
